A New Earth

So Oprah is having her first ever on-line class. It’s free and will be held on Monday evenings at 9pm est. on Oprah.com.starting March 3. The class will be covering the book, A New Earth, Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose by Eckart Tolle. This book is an inspirational & spiritual book that is meant to change the way we all think. Why are so many people stressed out, anxiety ridden, or just struggling with questions about who they are and what they should be doing with their life? Why are so many kids shooting up fellow students in schools? Why are so many people unhappy/angry? This book attempts to help people to find joy and fulfillment in their life. When you start with yourself, it can only grow bigger and spread between families, strangers, states, countries, the world. The author’s previous book, The Power of Now was a NY Times best seller and covered the issue of living life in the present. Don’t focus on your past failures or who did what to you in the past. It also covered worrying about the future. Worrying about future events that you don’t have any control over creates anxiety. Living life in the present is one of the greatest gifts you can have. Life is fuller, memories are better and you will notice things that you have never noticed before. Practicing that is a little challenging at first. It’s like meditating. Your mind wonders but you have to refocus and train your brain to stay focused on what is going on. I’m really looking forward to the online class. Each week will cover a different chapter in the book. It will be taught by Oprah and the author so you are getting two great people that will enhance the book with a personal lesson. Staying present in each moment is hard these days. With so many gadgets and technology to make our life easier, it somehow creates more and more distractions. How many of us talk or text (yikes!) as we drive. Eat while we watch TV? Cook while we  watch TV or help someone with homework? We are multi taskers! But with all that and all the stuff we have, new this and new that - are we any happier? Does buying “stuff” create true happiness? This past Sunday, 60 minutes had Denmark as one of the happiest countries. They figured it to be a few reasons...the lack of “stuff”, free college, free healthcare, free childcare, and 6 weeks vacation. The citizens there were indeed content! Their worries were fewer and they felt taken care of. There’s less competition, less jealousy and more free time with loved ones. Another measure of happiness, according to another study was family and friends. Are you spending time with the people you love? It’s not the money, the job, the “stuff”. Many times you’ll hear stories at the end of a person’s life-  they never wish for a bigger TV, the latest IPOD or DVD player, they wish for more time with their loved ones or making things right between someone they once wronged. They wished they followed a dream, no matter how big or small. Those are the things that matter. One of my favorite mantras is “I am where I am supposed to be”. And at this time, I’m writing this to you b/c it’s where I’m at. On a great journey of spiritual growth that I hope to pass along to you. See you on-line on Oprah!
